The Magna Charta Universitatum is a document that was signed by 388 rectors and heads of universities from all over Europe and beyond on 18 September 1988, the 900th anniversary of the University of Bologna.
It contains principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy as a guideline for good governance and self-understanding of universities in the future.
Having served universities well for 30 years the MCO Council has decided that a new Magna Charta Universitatum is needed. A draft has just been released for wide consultation which can be found here along with a background note, also you can read more about the Magna Charta in this link.
The Council would value your comments so that the new edition can also serve universities well and for as long. The consultation period closes on 2 August.
